One of the most common maintenance tasks on our motorcycle engines is changing the oil. This operation is vital for the engines and their longevity.
There's no general rule for when a motorcycle oil change is necessary. Some experts determine that the fluid should be changed every 2,000 kilometers when the settings are configured to use the oil to cool the engine, transmission, and clutch. If it's used only for the engine, it's possible to wait until 6,000 kilometers. However, the most accurate way to know the best time to change motorcycle oil is to read the manufacturer's instructions, as they know the vehicle best.
But is it necessary to change the oil?
An oil change is imperative and necessary; trying to prolong this process will not save you money; in fact, it could actually cause the vehicle's components to stop functioning properly and cause a breakdown.
It's important to remember that oil changes will depend on the type of motorcycle and usage. For example, a 4-stroke engine experiences higher pressures and temperatures than a 2-stroke engine. This causes the lubricant to degrade more quickly.
Likewise, oil replacement is linked to frequency of use, that is, the length of time the motorcycle is in use. Depending on the brand, some 4-stroke engines require a shorter oil change interval because the fluid lubricates the engine, clutch, and transmission. Generally speaking, the average mileage for a change is 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers.
However, if the oil is used to lubricate the engine and its content is about three or four liters, it is advisable to change it every 5,000 kilometers.
