In this blog, we'll continue our list of the most important race drivers we've ever seen. Some are still active in the races we enjoy today, while others are from the days of yesteryear when it was difficult to know what was happening in the races in person, yet we were still thrilled by the results.
Mick Doohan
Michael Sydney Doohan AM2 (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia; June 4, 1965), also known as Mick Doohan, is a former Australian motorcycle racing driver. Six years after a crash at Assen on June 26, 1992, in which Dutch doctors wanted to amputate his right leg, he won five consecutive 500cc titles. In 1994, Doohan started the championship slowly, but won nine races and the title with 143 points. By the end of 1998, he had won five consecutive world championships in the premier class. A record only equaled by Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi. He is considered one of the best riders in the history of his discipline, having won five consecutive 500cc world titles between 1994 and 1998, the top class of the Grand Prix, being surpassed only in the overall tally of world championships won in this category by Giacomo Agostini who won eight titles, Valentino Rossi with nine (1 in 500cc and 6 in MotoGP) and Marc Márquez with eight (6 in Moto GP). He also achieved 54 victories and 95 podiums in 500cc, always as a Honda rider, and won the 1991 Suzuka 8 Hours.
Jorge Lorenzo
Jorge Lorenzo Guerrero (born 4 May 1987 in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands) is a former Spanish motorcycle racing driver. He was a two-time 250cc World Champion in 2006 and 2007, and a three-time MotoGP World Champion in 2010, 2012, and 2015.
Lorenzo competed for the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team from 2008 to 2016, Ducati from 2017 to 2018, and Repsol Honda from 2019 onwards. The rider has accumulated 47 wins and 114 podiums in MotoGP.
On November 14, 2019, at a press conference at the Cheste Circuit, after a difficult season due to a poor adaptation to the Honda, several injuries, and, ultimately, negative results, he decided to announce his retirement as an active rider.
Marc Márquez
Marc Márquez Alentà (Cervera, Lleida, 17 February 1993) is a Spanish motorcycle racing driver who currently competes in MotoGP. 2 He has won eight World Motorcycle Championship titles in three different categories: 125cc (2010), Moto2 (2012) and six times in MotoGP (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019). 3 He currently rides for the Repsol Honda team, 4 where he has accumulated 50 wins and 78 podiums in 105 races. In February 2020, he extended his contract with Honda until 2024.
In his first season in the top category, in 2013, he won the MotoGP World Championship, becoming the youngest rider to win a championship in the sport's top category (MotoGP), thus surpassing Freddie Spencer's record. He is also the youngest rider in history to win two, three, four, five, and six times in the premier class of motorcycling.
John Surtees
John Surtees was a British motor racing driver and motorcycle racer. He was the only man in history to become both a Formula One and a motorcycle world champion. In the 1950s, he won four 500cc World Motorcycle Championship titles and three 350cc titles. He became Formula One World Champion in 1964 and runner-up in 1966. He also won the 1963 12 Hours of Sebring and the 1966 CanAm champion.
